KICKING GIANT
Kicking Giant is a minimalist indie punk band comprised of guitarist Tae Won Yu and drummer Rachel Carns. Formed in 1990 in New York City, they relocated to Olympia, Washington in 1992 after playing the International Pop Underground Convention the previous year. DIY hardliners, they released three cassette-only albums between 1990 and 1992, followed by a full-length album, Alien i.D. on K Records in 1994. Kicking Giant’s sound was characterized by the pairs’ minimal instrumentation and impassioned live performances. Practicing a collage-like aesthetic, their style remained open-ended throughout their career, borrowing from a range of influences that included avant-garde noise, abstract power pop, girl groups, garage rock and spoken word. After an extended hiatus they have reformed intermittently since 2013. In 2017 Drawing Room Records issued Halo, a 2-record set compilation culled from the band’s cassette albums to wide acclaim.
